About Centrifugal Pumps

Centrifugal pumps are the workhorse of sanitary fluid handling — the first choice for moving clean, low-viscosity product at higher flow rates and moderate pressure. CSI stocks and configures hygienic single- and multi-stage centrifugals for CIP/COP return, water and thin-product transfer, filling-line supply, and pressure boosting across food, dairy, beverage, and pharmaceutical plants.

Every centrifugal we carry runs 316L wetted construction with a hygienic surface finish and is available in 3-A and EHEDG-compliant builds. The Alfa Laval LKH — our most-specified line — spans 14 sizes with hundreds of orderable builds (seal type, elastomer, connection, motor), with UltraPure executions for biopharma and multistage versions for high-head duties. Single-stage units cover the bulk of transfer and CIP work; multistage steps in when one impeller can't reach the required head.

Not sure which size fits your duty point? Use the duty-point filter on the pump catalog to rule out incompatible models, or send CSI your flow, head, fluid, and temperature and an application engineer will return a sized model, performance curve, and quote — usually the same day.

Frequently Asked

Centrifugal Pumps FAQ

Choose a centrifugal for clean, low-viscosity fluids at higher flow and lower pressure — CIP return, water, and thin product. Switch to positive-displacement when the product is viscous, shear-sensitive, or needs accurate metering, since a centrifugal's flow drops off as back-pressure rises.

A single-stage pump has one impeller and handles the majority of sanitary transfer and CIP duties. A multistage pump stacks several impellers to build much higher head (pressure) at a given flow — the right choice for tall risers, long runs, or spray-device supply where a single stage falls short.

Most models are available in 3-A and EHEDG-compliant hygienic builds with 316L wetted parts and a ≤ 32 Ra surface finish. Exact certification depends on the seal, elastomer, and connection you choose, so confirm the final configuration with our team.

Start with your duty point — the flow rate (GPM) and total head (ft) the system needs — plus fluid viscosity and temperature. Use the duty-point filter on our pump catalog to narrow to compatible models, or send the conditions to a CSI engineer for a sized model and performance curve.

Yes. Sanitary centrifugals are widely used to move CIP solution and return it from the circuit, and their impeller design drains and cleans well. For combined product-transfer and CIP duty in a single unit, ask us about twin-screw alternatives.
